The Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, participated in the Maritime Skill Conclave 2026 organized by Ganpat University in Mumbai, where industry leaders, academicians, policymakers, and maritime professionals gathered to discuss the future of India’s maritime sector.
The conclave revolved around the theme “5T’s Shaping the Future of Maritime” — Talent, Technology, Transition, Trade and Transformation, focusing on the key drivers expected to shape the industry’s growth and competitiveness in the coming years.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Jagannathan emphasized that India’s youthful demographic profile, supported by strong financial and digital inclusion initiatives, offers a significant opportunity for the country to strengthen its position as a global maritime powerhouse. He called upon stakeholders across the maritime ecosystem to work collaboratively to fully leverage this advantage and build a future-ready workforce.
The Director General also outlined several initiatives being undertaken by the Directorate General of Shipping to enhance maritime education and training standards. He reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to fostering quality, innovation, and global competitiveness in maritime skill development, ensuring that Indian seafarers and maritime professionals remain well-equipped to meet evolving industry demands.
Highlighting the importance of industry-academia partnerships, Shri Jagannathan appreciated the growing collaboration between Ganpat University and the Directorate General of Shipping, noting that such engagements are playing a crucial role in developing a skilled talent pool for the maritime sector.
