Evergreen Marine Corporation has placed an order for five new 24,000-TEU LNG-fuelled container vessels as part of its ongoing fleet expansion and decarbonisation strategy.

The ultra-large containerships will be equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG), enabling lower emissions compared with conventional marine fuels. Industry analysts said the investment reflects growing efforts by global carriers to comply with tightening environmental regulations and improve fuel efficiency across long-haul trade routes.

The new vessels are expected to strengthen Evergreen’s capacity on major east-west shipping corridors linking Asia, Europe and North America. Shipping experts noted that larger, fuel-efficient ships can help carriers optimise operating costs while supporting increasing cargo demand on high-volume trade lanes.

The order also highlights the broader industry shift towards alternative marine fuels as shipping companies accelerate sustainability initiatives and prepare for stricter international carbon reduction targets. LNG-powered vessels are being increasingly adopted as an interim solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental performance.

Evergreen said the investment forms part of its long-term fleet modernisation programme aimed at enhancing operational competitiveness and service reliability. Analysts added that demand for next-generation eco-friendly containerships is expected to remain strong as carriers continue transitioning towards greener maritime operations.
