Global shipping and logistics leader A.P. Moller – Maersk has taken delivery of the first vessel in a new mid-size container ship series, marking a key milestone in its ongoing fleet renewal programme.

The new ship, Tangier Mærsk, was handed over at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group’s yard in Jingjiang, China, and is the initial unit of a planned class of six mid-size vessels, each with a capacity of 9,000 TEU.

Equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol, the Tangier Mærsk reflects Maersk’s strategy to enhance its fleet’s sustainability and flexibility while supporting its long-term competitiveness.

On its maiden voyage, the vessel will call at Shanghai before entering service on Maersk’s TP15 loop, a major trade route linking East Asia with the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal.

Delivered three months ahead of schedule, Tangier Mærsk leads a series that will see four additional ships arrive later this year, with the final vessel slated for early 2027.

Maersk said the expanded mid-size class will strengthen its service offerings and support more efficient deployment across key global shipping lanes, furthering its efforts toward a lower-emissions, resilient fleet.
