The first phase of the upcoming multimodal logistics park at Mappedu, Chennai, will be operational by February 2026.

Sunil Paliwal, Chairperson of Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Limited, announced during a press briefing in Coimbatore on Friday.

According to Paliwal, the project’s first phase involves an investment of Rs 350 crore and will be completed as part of a larger plan that spans three phases with a total investment of Rs 1,400 crore.

He also disclosed that plans are underway for a multimodal logistics park in Coimbatore, too.

Paliwal noted that Chennai and Kamarajar ports currently handle around 20 per cent of the export cargo generated from Coimbatore and nearby districts.

He added that there is strong potential to handle more engineering and project cargo headed east, and suggested exploring collaboration with shipping lines to stock empty containers in Coimbatore for better access by exporters.

In FY 2024–25, the two ports collectively managed over 100 million tonnes of cargo.

Each port reported operational income above Rs 1,000 crore.

Chennai Port, equipped with two container terminals developed through public-private partnerships, has a handling capacity of 3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

Kamarajar Port currently operates one terminal and is constructing a second, which will increase its combined TEU capacity to 1.4 million.
