Hambantota International Port has achieved a new operational milestone by handling 13,260 TEUs from a single vessel, setting a fresh record for container moves at the Sri Lankan gateway. The achievement highlights the port’s growing capabilities and rising role in regional transshipment and mainline shipping networks.

Port officials said the record operation demonstrated strong terminal productivity, coordinated yard planning and efficient crane performance. Successfully managing such a high-volume exchange from one vessel reflects improving infrastructure readiness and operational maturity at the port.

Located along key East-West maritime trade lanes, Hambantota has been expanding its footprint beyond vehicle transshipment into containerized cargo, bulk trade and logistics services. The latest milestone is expected to strengthen confidence among global carriers evaluating alternative South Asian hub options.

Authorities noted that continued investments in equipment, workforce training and terminal systems are helping boost throughput potential. As shipping lines seek faster turnarounds and diversified routing options, Hambantota is positioning itself as an increasingly competitive gateway in the Indian Ocean region.
