Hapag-Lloyd has taken another step toward its decarbonization goals by introducing windshields as part of its ongoing Fleet Upgrade Program, launched in 2022 to modernize over 100 vessels with efficiency-enhancing technologies such as new propellers, bulbous bows, and advanced hull coatings.
The newly added retrofit measure — windshields designed to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency — was first installed on the Cochrane, followed by the Antwerpen Express and Shanghai Express, with more vessels scheduled for upgrades. Backed by DNV research, the innovation is expected to deliver fuel savings of around 1%.
Hapag-Lloyd’s latest newbuilds, the Genova Express and Wilhelmshaven Express, have also been delivered with windshields already in place, further boosting their operational efficiency.
By combining this new measure with existing upgrades, Hapag-Lloyd says it is making steady progress toward its 2030 target of cutting fleet emissions by one-third compared to 2022 levels.
