Hambantota International Port is ramping up its roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) and container handling capacity as shifting global trade routes drive new cargo flows across the Indian Ocean.
The port has initiated a series of infrastructure enhancements, including expanded yard space, upgraded cargo handling equipment, and improved terminal operations to accommodate rising volumes of vehicle shipments and containerized freight. The move is aimed at strengthening its position as a key transshipment and logistics hub in the region.
Officials indicated that the increase in RoRo capacity is expected to support growing automotive trade, particularly vehicle transshipment between Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Meanwhile, container capacity upgrades will enable the port to handle larger vessels and improve turnaround efficiency.
Strategically located along major East–West shipping lanes, Hambantota is well-positioned to benefit from ongoing rerouting of global maritime traffic. The port’s development aligns with broader efforts to capture a greater share of regional transshipment volumes.
With these capacity enhancements, Hambantota International Port is strengthening its competitiveness and reinforcing its role in facilitating trade amid evolving global shipping patterns.
