The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Saadia Zahidi as its first female Director General, marking a historic milestone in the organisation’s more than 80-year history. Zahidi will lead the global airline industry body as it continues to address evolving challenges and opportunities across the aviation sector.

Bringing extensive experience in global economic policy, international business and strategic leadership, Zahidi is expected to focus on strengthening the aviation industry’s resilience, accelerating sustainability initiatives and supporting long-term growth. Her appointment reflects IATA’s commitment to fostering inclusive leadership while guiding the industry through a period of rapid transformation.

As Director General, Zahidi will work closely with airlines, governments, regulators and industry stakeholders to advance priorities such as decarbonisation, digital transformation, operational efficiency and global connectivity. She is also expected to play a key role in shaping policies that promote safe, secure and sustainable air transport.

The appointment comes as the global aviation industry continues to experience strong passenger and cargo demand while investing heavily in technologies and alternative fuels to achieve net-zero emissions targets. IATA remains at the forefront of industry collaboration, advocating harmonised regulations and improved infrastructure to support future growth.

Saadia Zahidi’s appointment represents a significant leadership milestone for the aviation sector and is expected to bring a fresh perspective to IATA’s efforts to strengthen global air transport and enhance cooperation across the industry.
