The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) – Madras Branch, in collaboration with WISTA India, successfully hosted the first edition of its newly launched knowledge-sharing initiative, “Sea of Change – Series 1,” at The Presidency Club, Chennai. The event marked a significant step toward fostering informed dialogue on the evolving dynamics of the global maritime industry.

The session drew participation from a diverse audience comprising maritime professionals, academicians, and students, reflecting strong industry interest in understanding the structural shifts reshaping global shipping and trade.

The programme featured two in-depth presentations by industry experts. Capt. Amarendra Mishra, Country Manager (India), Bahri Line, delivered a comprehensive overview of the global fundamentals influencing maritime trade. His address examined the geopolitical and economic developments impacting vessel charter rates, demand–supply balances across asset classes, and emerging trade patterns in a multipolar global economy. He also highlighted the growing importance of rare earth minerals, shifting commodity performance trends, and the operational and commercial changes redefining the future of global shipping.

The second session was led by Mr. Muthu Jagannath, Arbitrator, Mediator, and Claims Adjuster, who focused on industry transformation driven by artificial intelligence, sustainability imperatives, and regulatory change. Introducing the concept of Redundancy Management (RM)—traditionally applied to marine engineering safety—he demonstrated its relevance as a strategic framework for eliminating single points of failure in business processes. Applying RM to marine insurance, he underscored the importance of proactive risk management and training over excessive insurance cover. In dispute resolution, he advocated prioritising business continuity and enforceable outcomes over protracted litigation, noting that pragmatic compromise often serves long-term commercial interests.

Concluding the session, speakers emphasised that successfully navigating the future maritime landscape amid geopolitical uncertainty and technological change would require heightened awareness, adaptability, and timely decision-making.

ICS Madras Branch expressed gratitude to WISTA India for its collaboration and thanked the speakers, fellows, members, and guests for contributing to the success of the inaugural edition of the “Sea of Change” series.
