India’s e-commerce sector is facing significant headwinds as the ongoing West Asia crisis drives up fuel costs and disrupts logistics networks, Business Standard reported.

Rising crude oil prices and uncertainty over supplies have increased transportation expenses, a key cost component for e-commerce and quick-commerce firms. With a large share of India’s oil imports passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the geopolitical tensions are directly impacting domestic supply chains.

The strain is being felt across operations, from warehousing to last-mile delivery. Irregular supply flows and higher freight costs are leading to shipment delays and affecting service timelines, particularly for companies dependent on rapid deliveries.

The crisis is also impacting workforce availability. Shortages of essential fuels such as LPG are affecting daily operations at warehouses and fulfilment centres, while logistical challenges are contributing to labour disruptions in some locations.

In addition, higher energy costs are pushing up packaging and input expenses, further squeezing margins for e-commerce firms and sellers operating on their platforms.

Industry players are responding by optimising delivery routes, adjusting inventory strategies, and taking steps to retain workforce capacity. Meanwhile, the government is closely monitoring the situation, particularly its impact on shipping routes and trade flows.

The developments highlight the vulnerability of India’s e-commerce ecosystem to global disruptions, even as the sector continues to see strong underlying demand.
