In a major push towards modernizing freight operations, Indian Railways has launched scheduled, commodity-specific, time-tabled cargo train services connecting key production and consumption hubs across North India. These services aim to enhance predictability, reduce transit times, and improve overall logistics efficiency for industries reliant on rail transport.

According to an official statement, the initiative currently includes several dedicated freight services:

Annapurna Service: Transports food grains from Ludhiana to Varanasi, covering 704 kilometers in just 17 hours.

Gati-Vahan Service: Carries automobiles from Farrukhnagar (Haryana) to Lucknow, reducing the transit time to 28 hours from the previous 70 hours over 557 kilometers.

Niryaat Cargo Service: Operates between Garhi and Mundra Port, covering 1,061 kilometers for containerized cargo in 32 hours.

Anantnag Cement Cargo Service: Moves cement from Roopnagar to Anantnag over 586 kilometers in 31 hours.

These services have been launched after extensive consultations with key freight stakeholders, including the Food Corporation of India, automobile logistics providers, container train operators, and adjacent railway zones. Initially introduced as trial runs, the cargo trains have now stabilized and are operating efficiently on fixed schedules.

The time-tabled nature of these cargo services allows consignors and consignees to better plan their supply chains, as they are provided with advance information on train schedules. This is expected to significantly enhance operational predictability and reduce logistics costs for businesses.

Indian Railways is also complementing this initiative with policy support. A recent amendment to the 2022 land leasing policy has relaxed norms to encourage development of value-added logistics infrastructure such as sorting, grading, packaging, and labelling units on vacant railway land. This is aimed particularly at supporting the growth of e-commerce cargo movement.

The new cargo services and land policy reforms form part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to scale up goods movement across the country and position rail freight as a more competitive, efficient alternative to road transport.
