Indian Railways sustained its freight growth momentum in May 2026, loading 145 million tonnes (MT) of freight, marking a 1.3% increase compared to the same month last year. The growth was driven by higher volumes in iron ore, steel, fertilisers, and other goods segments, according to the Ministry of Railways.
The ministry said the increase was achieved despite disruptions to global logistics and supply chains stemming from the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Through continuous operational monitoring and efficient asset utilisation, Indian Railways ensured the uninterrupted movement of essential commodities across the country.
Among key freight categories, the Balance Other Goods segment registered the strongest growth at 16%, followed by iron ore at 4.8%, pig iron and finished steel at 3.5%, and fertilisers at 6.2% year-on-year.
Coal, which remains the largest component of railway freight traffic, recorded nearly 1% growth during the month. Indian Railways prioritised coal transportation to thermal power plants and closely monitored transit operations to support the country’s energy security requirements.
The national transporter also intensified oversight of both domestic and EXIM container traffic to facilitate seamless cargo movement and maintain supply chain efficiency amid evolving global trade conditions.
On the passenger side, Indian Railways carried more than 61 crore passengers in May 2026, up from around 59 crore passengers during the corresponding period last year. The growth was primarily led by the non-suburban segment, where passenger numbers rose from 28 crore to 30 crore, representing a 7.4% increase.
To accommodate the seasonal rise in travel demand, Indian Railways operated a large number of Summer Special Trains across multiple routes. Passenger convenience was further enhanced through the continued expansion of modern train services.
The Railways currently operates 164 Vande Bharat services, including the recently launched Sleeper Vande Bharat service connecting Howrah and Kamakhya. The number of Amrit Bharat services has reached 68, with three new services inaugurated during May.
With steady growth in freight loading, strong performance across key commodity segments, and rising passenger numbers, Indian Railways continues to reinforce its position as a critical driver of India’s economic activity and transportation infrastructure.
