In a significant milestone for India’s maritime sector, the country’s first Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Government of India’s Shipbuilding Development Scheme—National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park, Tamil Nadu (NSHIP, TN)—has been formally established.
The SPV has been incorporated as a 50:50 Joint Venture between V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (Government of India) and SIPCOT (Government of Tamil Nadu), reflecting strong Centre–State collaboration to accelerate indigenous shipbuilding capacity.
NSHIP, TN will develop a mega shipbuilding and heavy industries cluster at Tuticorin, aimed at strengthening India’s commercial shipbuilding and repair ecosystem. The project is expected to catalyse Greenfield industrial development, attract global investments, promote technology-driven manufacturing, and generate large-scale employment across skilled and semi-skilled segments.
The initiative aligns with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, supporting import substitution, green and sustainable shipbuilding practices, and the creation of globally competitive maritime infrastructure.
With this landmark step, India moves closer to building a self-reliant, future-ready and globally competitive maritime ecosystem, positioning Tuticorin as a key hub in the country’s shipbuilding and heavy engineering landscape.
