The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has further strengthened Kerala’s water-based transport network with the operation of its Ro-Ro vessel CV Raman between Willingdon Island and Bolgatty Jetty. The service operates via National Waterway-3, cutting through the busy Kochi Port area.

Designed to carry vehicles and cargo, the CV Raman offers a vital link across the backwaters, reducing dependence on road transport. By diverting freight movement from congested city roads, the service is expected to ease traffic bottlenecks, reduce travel time, and lower carbon emissions — aligning with the government’s vision for greener, more efficient logistics.

Kochi’s location as a maritime hub makes the route strategically significant, offering quick and eco-friendly access for trade and transport within the city’s port zone. Officials say the service also highlights the potential of inland waterways as a reliable mode for both commercial and passenger movement.
