Fruit exporters in Kashmir are urging authorities to introduce refrigerated rail transport to improve the efficiency and reliability of fruit shipments, particularly for apples and other perishable produce.
Growers and traders say the lack of an adequate cold chain rail network forces them to rely heavily on road transport, which often leads to delays, higher costs, and quality deterioration during transit. This is especially critical during peak harvest seasons when large volumes need to be moved quickly to markets across India.
Industry stakeholders believe that dedicated reefer rail services would help reduce post-harvest losses, extend shelf life, and ensure better price realisation for farmers. It would also enhance access to distant markets by maintaining consistent temperature control throughout the journey.
The demand comes amid increasing focus on strengthening agricultural logistics and reducing wastage in India’s supply chain. Exporters note that improved rail-based cold chain infrastructure could significantly boost competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
Officials are expected to review the proposal as part of broader efforts to modernise agri-logistics and support the horticulture sector in Kashmir, which plays a vital role in the region’s economy.
