Kochi-based marine engineering firm KMEW has secured a ₹66 crore order to develop 10 hybrid electric ferries, marking a significant step toward promoting cleaner and more sustainable maritime transport solutions.

The project will focus on deploying energy-efficient vessels designed to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency in water-based passenger transport. The hybrid electric ferries are expected to support the transition toward greener mobility by combining electric propulsion technology with conventional systems.

The order highlights the growing demand for environmentally friendly marine infrastructure as governments and operators look to reduce carbon emissions from transportation networks.

KMEW’s latest contract strengthens its presence in the emerging green maritime sector, where electric and hybrid vessel technologies are gaining attention for their potential to lower fuel consumption and operating costs.

The company’s expansion into hybrid ferry projects aligns with broader efforts to modernize inland and coastal transport systems while supporting sustainable shipping initiatives.
