Konkan Railway has commissioned its second enhanced roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) rake, featuring a 57-tonne carrying capacity, strengthening freight movement along the coastal corridor. According to a senior railway official, the upgraded rake was formally introduced on December 3, following the launch of the first enhanced-capacity rake on November 5.

The Ro-Ro service — which allows loaded trucks to be transported on railway wagons — continues to gain traction as a cost-effective and time-saving logistics solution in the region. Each newly introduced rake comprises 15 BRN wagons capable of carrying trucks up to 57 tonnes, along with 35 box wagons that can transport loads up to 50 tonnes.

As per existing guidelines, the maximum permissible weight for BRN wagons has been revised to 57 tonnes for these two upgraded rakes, while box wagons are capped at 50 tonnes. For all other Ro-Ro rakes, the overall limit remains 50 tonnes. Excess weight charges have been fixed at ₹800 per tonne, in addition to applicable GST.

The enhanced capacity is expected to significantly benefit transporters and industries handling iron and steel, marble, tiles, construction materials, and other heavy consignments along the Konkan Railway route, offering improved efficiency and reduced logistics costs.
