Maersk will introduce a €65 per-container Inland Peak Season Surcharge (IPI) on import reefer containers handled at the Port of Algeciras, Spain, citing congestion at the port.

The surcharge will take effect on 19 August 2026 for non-FMC shipments, while the FMC effective date is 19 September 2026. It applies exclusively to import refrigerated containers and does not cover dry cargo.

Maersk said the charge is expected to remain in place until 30 September 2026 for non-FMC shipments and 31 October 2026 for FMC shipments, subject to review depending on congestion conditions at Algeciras.

The new fee is likely to increase inland handling costs for temperature-sensitive cargo moving through the Spanish port during the peak season.
