The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is weighing a new land and captive berth policies for state-owned major ports for allotting waterfront and associated land to port dependent industries, a senior official has said.

“We are looking at revised policies which are in the advanced stages of consideration,” R Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said while addressing the ‘Global Ports and Shipping Summit’ in Mumbai on Thursday.

The revised policies aim to address the issues in the current policies, particularly around the rate at which the land is given, how the lease rentals are determined so that it is more transparent and friendly, Lakshmanan said.

“Similarly, there are issues around renewal of leases. The existing land policy doesn’t really facilitate that. These concerns are being addressed in the revised policies so that it becomes more friendly to the industry, and it also supports the long-term growth of the ports as well,” he added.
