Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to step up exports and sharpen their global competitiveness, underscoring the sector’s critical role in driving economic growth and job creation.
Addressing industry stakeholders, Modi said MSMEs must focus on improving product quality, adopting advanced technologies and aligning with global standards to strengthen their presence in international markets. He emphasized that the sector is central to India’s ambitions of becoming a major manufacturing and export hub.
The Prime Minister urged small businesses to leverage government initiatives aimed at enhancing ease of doing business, expanding access to credit and promoting digitalisation. He noted that schemes supporting innovation, skill development and market access are designed to help MSMEs scale up operations and compete effectively worldwide.
Highlighting the importance of value addition and branding, Modi encouraged entrepreneurs to move up the supply chain and build globally recognised Indian brands. He also stressed the need for sustainability and compliance with international environmental norms, which are increasingly influencing trade dynamics.
MSMEs contribute significantly to India’s GDP, exports and employment, making them a cornerstone of the country’s growth strategy. Industry leaders welcomed the Prime Minister’s push, saying stronger policy support and market linkages would be key to unlocking the sector’s export potential.
With global trade patterns evolving, the government expects MSMEs to play a larger role in diversifying export baskets and tapping new markets, reinforcing India’s position in the global economy.
