Mumbai is actively seeking partnerships to secure a stable supply of methanol, as part of broader efforts to diversify fuel sources and support cleaner energy initiatives. The move aligns with India’s push to promote alternative fuels and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

Industry sources indicate that stakeholders in Mumbai are engaging with both domestic producers and international suppliers to establish long-term methanol sourcing arrangements. The focus is on ensuring consistent availability to meet rising demand from sectors such as shipping, power generation, and industrial applications.

Methanol is gaining traction as a cleaner-burning fuel and a viable alternative for marine bunkering, especially as global regulations tighten on emissions. Ports and shipping operators in Mumbai are exploring its potential to support greener maritime operations, including retrofitting vessels and developing necessary storage and handling infrastructure.

Officials are also evaluating the feasibility of setting up dedicated methanol bunkering facilities and integrating supply chains to streamline distribution. Collaboration with global energy firms is expected to play a key role in scaling up supply and ensuring competitive pricing.

The initiative reflects Mumbai’s growing focus on sustainability and energy transition, positioning the city as a potential hub for alternative marine fuels in the region.
