The Palakkad Railway Division has achieved a record freight loading of 7.34 million tonnes in the financial year 2025–26, marking its highest-ever performance and reinforcing its growing role in regional logistics.

Officials attributed the milestone to improved operational efficiency, enhanced coordination with key industries, and increased demand for bulk cargo movement across sectors such as cement, fertilizers, petroleum products, and food grains. Strategic initiatives to streamline freight handling and optimize wagon utilization also contributed to the record-breaking performance.

The division, which operates under Southern Railway, has been focusing on strengthening infrastructure and adopting digital tools to boost freight capacity. Investments in yard modernization and better connectivity with industrial hubs have further supported the surge in cargo volumes.

Industry stakeholders noted that the achievement highlights the growing importance of rail freight in ensuring cost-effective and sustainable logistics, especially amid rising fuel costs and environmental concerns. Rail transport continues to offer a reliable alternative to road transport for bulk commodities.

With this milestone, the Palakkad Division is expected to further scale up its freight operations, aligning with Indian Railways’ broader goal of increasing the modal share of rail in the country’s freight movement.
