Key ports in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, including the world’s largest iron-ore export hub at Port Hedland and nearby terminals at Ashburton, Cape Preston West, Dampier and Vranus Island, were closed over the weekend as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell moved toward the northwest coast.

Pilbara Ports Authority suspended operations and cleared all berths and anchorages in anticipation of severe weather, prioritising safety and the protection of personnel and infrastructure.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast that Mitchell could strengthen to a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone, with destructive wind gusts and heavy rainfall expected to impact coastal towns and communities from Dampier to Onslow. Emergency warnings have been issued for residents, with authorities urging people to take shelter and prepare for flash flooding.

The temporary shutdown affects export activity from the Pilbara—a critical node for Australia’s mineral exports, particularly iron ore—and underscores the vulnerability of maritime logistics to extreme weather. Port Hedland has already begun a phased resumption of operations, but several neighboring terminals remain closed as conditions are monitored.
