Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition towards clean and sustainable rail transportation. With the launch, India joins a select group of nations operating hydrogen-powered trains.

The indigenously developed train, which will operate on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route, has been designed, engineered and integrated in India using home-grown technology. Powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train generates electricity onboard by converting hydrogen into power, producing only water vapour as a by-product, making it a zero-emission transport solution.

Featuring a 10-coach configuration, the train is among the world’s longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains and is equipped with a 3,200 HP propulsion system, making it one of the most powerful hydrogen-powered trainsets currently in operation. Unlike conventional electric trains, it does not require continuous overhead electrification, offering a cleaner and more flexible alternative while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and thermal power-based electricity.

The flag-off ceremony will take place at Jind Railway Station as part of the Prime Minister’s visit to Haryana, where he will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth approximately ₹14,700 crore at Eklavya Stadium, Jind.

    Major Highway and Connectivity Projects

A significant portion of the investment is directed towards road infrastructure, with National Highway projects worth over ₹12,470 crore being launched.

Among the key projects is the inauguration of the 157.92-km four-lane, access-controlled Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway (Packages 1–5), built at a cost of around ₹9,680 crore. The Greenfield corridor, part of the 667-km Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway, is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Katra from nearly 14 hours to around six hours, while cutting the Delhi–Amritsar journey to about four hours. The corridor is expected to ease congestion on NH-44, boost pilgrimage and tourism traffic, and stimulate industrial and logistics development along the route.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the 33.81-km Ambala–Kala Amb Highway, improving connectivity between Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and supporting industrial growth in the Kala Amb region.

Another key project is the 40.60-km Jind–Gohana Greenfield Highway, which will reduce travel time between the two cities from nearly two hours to around 40 minutes, benefiting commuters, agricultural trade and freight movement while strengthening links to Rohtak, Panipat and the Delhi-NCR region.

Additionally, Modi will lay the foundation stone for the 24.27-km Hansi–Barwala Brownfield Highway Project, aimed at upgrading the existing road to improve regional connectivity.

    Rail and Healthcare Infrastructure

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Elevated Railway Track at Kurukshetra, a project expected to eliminate traffic congestion at railway crossings, enhance road safety and improve operational efficiency for both rail and road transport.

In the healthcare sector, Modi will dedicate to the nation the Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government Medical College in Bhiwani and the Maharishi Chyawan Medical College and Rao Tula Ram Hospital at Koriawas, Narnaul. These institutions are expected to expand medical education, increase MBBS seats and improve access to specialised healthcare services across Haryana.

He will also lay the foundation stone for a Sikh Museum at Kurukshetra, which will showcase the history of Sikhism, the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and the contributions of the Sikh community to India’s cultural and national heritage.

Following his Haryana programme, the Prime Minister will travel to Chandigarh to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects worth over ₹4,700 crore, before proceeding to Jalandhar, Punjab, where he will launch development projects valued at more than ₹5,470 crore.
