Sinotrans Container Lines has signed contracts for 12 new container vessels with a combined nominal capacity of around 52,000 TEU, marking a significant step in the company’s fleet expansion and long-term service enhancement strategy.
The newbuilding programme includes four 8,200 TEU containerships to be constructed by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu), four 3,000 TEU vessels to be built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, and four 1,800 TEU vessels to be delivered by China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard.
The vessels will adopt the latest designs developed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and will feature a range of intelligent technologies, including smart behaviour recognition systems, intelligent energy-efficiency management, and hull fouling monitoring systems aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.
Deliveries of the new ships are scheduled to begin in 2027.
Beyond fleet growth, the project highlights the strong industrial coordination within China Merchants Group. Sinotrans Container Lines operates as the container shipping platform under China Merchants Energy Shipping, while all three shipyards involved are part of the China Merchants shipbuilding network.
The programme demonstrates how the group is leveraging its integrated shipping, shipbuilding and design capabilities to support fleet renewal, strengthen operational competitiveness and enhance long-term service capacity across its container shipping business.
