The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched eight key projects of the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) during its golden jubilee celebration held in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, Sonowal said the Central government is committed to transforming Indian ports into modern, efficient and sustainable gateways capable of competing globally. He highlighted that India’s maritime sector has witnessed significant growth over the past 11 years and is expected to attract around ₹80 lakh crore in investments by 2047.

Sonowal informed that New Mangalore Port is constructing a new deep-draft general cargo berth, which will commence operations soon. On sustainability, he noted that New Mangalore Port is one of the first major ports in the country to run entirely on solar power.

He added that NMPA’s journey reflects the transformative progress of India’s maritime sector under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, and asserted that the port will continue to play a pivotal role in achieving the Viksit Bharat vision of a $30 trillion economy and global maritime leadership.

“The launch of eight projects at New Mangalore Port is a testament to the Government’s focused push for infrastructural excellence,” the Minister said.

A.V. Ramana, Chairman of NMPA, said the golden jubilee marks a moment of immense pride, recalling the port’s growth from a single berth to one of India’s leading ports. He stated that the newly launched projects are not just infrastructure, but milestones in making NMPA future-ready, built on the dedication of its workforce, stakeholders and partners.

To commemorate the occasion, a postal stamp and a commemorative coin were released as part of the celebration.
