Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the former Chairman of DP World, has taken charge of MMC Port Holdings, Malaysia’s largest port operator, marking a significant leadership change at one of Southeast Asia’s key maritime infrastructure companies.

According to a company memo, Bin Sulayem assumes direct oversight of the group’s operations following the immediate departure of Group Chief Executive Officer Azman Shah Mohd Yusof. As part of the transition, senior management and the chief executives of MMC Ports’ operating terminals will now report directly to Bin Sulayem.

MMC Port Holdings operates seven strategically located ports along and near the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest and most critical maritime trade routes, handling a substantial share of global container and bulk cargo traffic. The company’s leadership transition comes at a time when it had been preparing for what was expected to be Malaysia’s largest initial public offering (IPO) in more than a decade before the listing was postponed.

Bin Sulayem is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the global ports and logistics industry. During his tenure at DP World, he played a pivotal role in transforming the company into one of the world’s leading port and supply chain operators with an extensive international footprint.

He stepped down as Chairman of DP World on February 13, following a leadership restructuring in which Essa Kazim was appointed Chairman and Yuvraj Narayan assumed the role of Group Chief Executive Officer.

Industry observers believe Bin Sulayem’s appointment at MMC Port Holdings could strengthen the company’s strategic positioning, enhance operational efficiencies, and support its long-term growth ambitions amid increasing competition among regional gateway ports and evolving global supply chain dynamics.

The development is expected to be closely watched by the maritime and logistics industry, given MMC Ports’ critical role in Malaysia’s trade infrastructure and the strategic importance of the Strait of Malacca in global shipping.
