Tiruchirappalli Airport Sees 10% Rise in International Cargo, Emerges as Key Logistics Hub

Tiruchirappalli International Airport has recorded a significant 10% growth in international cargo traffic, with average monthly volumes increasing from 540 metric tonnes (MTs) to around 590 MTs, according to a statement released by the airport authority.

The steady rise in cargo volumes underscores the airport’s growing importance as a logistics gateway for central Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions.

Marking a major strategic milestone, the airport commissioned its first-ever transhipment facility, which became operational on October 13, 2025. The facility allows cargo to be transferred between aircraft at an intermediate hub, enabling consolidation and efficient routing to multiple destinations. This transhipment system helps optimise load management, reduce freight costs, and improve connectivity for city pairs without direct flight services—particularly benefiting tier-2 and tier-3 cities such as Tiruchirappalli.

To meet increasing domestic cargo demand, the airport is also planning a full-fledged domestic cargo terminal with a projected handling capacity of approximately 200 MTs per month. The proposed terminal will be integrated with the existing international cargo complex and will leverage the airport’s strong multimodal connectivity, including access to National Highways NH-83 and NH-38, as well as proximity to major ports.

In another key development, the International Courier Facility—originally notified in 2022 but remaining non-operational until now—is set to be activated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model through an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract. Once operational, the facility will enable businesses and individuals in the region to send time-sensitive documents and parcels to destinations across Southeast Asia and Gulf countries, offering faster transit times and cost-effective alternatives to routing via major metropolitan hubs.

The commissioning of the transhipment facility, sustained growth in international cargo volumes, proposed domestic cargo terminal, and the forthcoming operationalisation of courier services collectively signal Tiruchirappalli International Airport’s transformation into a comprehensive cargo hub, significantly strengthening logistics infrastructure across central and southern India.
