The foundation stone for the Tata Semiconductor Assemble and Test Facility in Jagiroad, Assam was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 13. This marks a significant milestone in the semiconductor industry as it plans to export chips globally, signaling a major advancement in India’s electronics sector.
The project is being built at an estimated cost of ₹27,000 crore.
The facility, as elucidated by Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, is dedicated to the production of specialised chips focused on power management. These chips play a critical role in various electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and automobiles.
What sets this facility apart is its emphasis on producing chips that are made in India. These chips will not only cater to domestic demand but will also be exported to major global markets such as the United States, Europe, and Japan.
