The government on Tuesday (2 December) informed the Rajya Sabha that 78 projects under the Sagarmala Programme have been completed, while more than 40 projects are currently under implementation across coastal States and Union Territories.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, 124 projects have been sanctioned so far under the Sagarmala scheme, with a total cost of ₹8,670 crore. The Centre has committed ₹3,238 crore as its share, of which ₹2,838 crore has already been released to States and implementing agencies.
As per state-wise data, Maharashtra leads with 20 completed projects out of 33 sanctioned, followed by Tamil Nadu with 16 completed out of 24. Other major states reporting progress include Gujarat (5 of 9), Andhra Pradesh (7 of 9), Goa (9 of 11), Karnataka (4 of 8), Kerala (6 of 9), West Bengal (8 of 10), and Odisha (1 of 6). Puducherry and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have each completed one project.
Launched in March 2015, the Sagarmala Programme aims to boost port-led development, streamline logistics, and enhance India’s trade competitiveness by leveraging its 7,500 km coastline and extensive network of waterways. The initiative forms a core component of the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which targets substantial expansion in port capacity, shipbuilding, and maritime infrastructure to position India among the world’s leading maritime nations by 2047.
