Ajman is set to embark on a major infrastructure expansion of its port under a new AED 1 billion agreement with global port operator Hutchison Ports.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed this week in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman and Chairman of the Executive Council, outlines a long-term development plan to transform Ajman Port into a high-efficiency logistics hub.
15-year roadmap for transformation
Under the MoU, the Department of Port & Customs Ajman (DPC) and Hutchison Ports will draw up a 15-year integrated strategy to manage, operate, and develop Ajman Port in line with international best practices.
The plan aims to boost handling performance, operational speed, and safety standards, while also aligning with digital transformation goals and introducing AI-powered port management systems.
“We welcome the signing of the MoU between the Department of Port & Customs Ajman and Hutchison Ports, which paves the way for a strategic, exceptional, and vital project that reflects the status of Ajman and supports its Vision 2030, enhancing its leadership and competitiveness on the global economic map,” H.H. Sheikh Ammar said.
An investment in Ajman’s future
Highlighting the broader impact of the project, the Crown Prince described port development as “an investment in the future of trade, food security, and economic growth.”
He also pointed to the Emirate’s “developed and attractive investment environment,” supported by a dynamic business ecosystem and new opportunities for both local and foreign investors.
The port redevelopment is expected to stimulate the local economy by supporting supply chains, improving import-export capabilities, and delivering sustainable infrastructure. A key focus of the plan will be on developing national talent and equipping the local workforce with modern port management skills.
Building on existing links
The MoU was signed by Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Department of Port & Customs Ajman, and Andy Tsoi, Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa Division at Hutchison Ports.
Sheikh Dr. Mohammed said the agreement aligns with the aspirations of H.H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, and H.H. Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, to build strategic partnerships focused on technology transfer and global best practices.
The collaboration between DPC and Hutchison is not new. Since 2011, the partnership has contributed to strengthening Ajman Port’s role in the UAE’s maritime transport network, a position now set to be significantly enhanced through this expanded investment.
