Indian cocoa is gaining popularity in international markets. In the last financial year (2024–25), the country exported cocoa products worth ₹2,512.39 crore, with a total volume of 45,489.25 tonnes. This marks a remarkable 65% increase compared to the previous year,
when 36,185.06 tonnes of cocoa products were exported, earning ₹1,521.97 crore.

India exports a variety of cocoa derivatives, including cocoa beans, butter, paste, powder, and shells. These are purchased by companies abroad, processed into value-added products, and often re-enter the Indian market.

Cocoa is a key ingredient in a wide range of industries, from chocolate manufacturing to cosmetics and even animal feed. A drop in global cocoa production last year worked in India’s favour, helping boost exports. Rising international demand for chocolate also contributed to the export surge. There was strong domestic demand as well.

However, this year’s high domestic cocoa production has led to a lukewarm response from major procurers, including companies operating in Kerala. With fewer buyers, farmers now face the risk of financial losses.

Slight decline in Kerala’s cocoa exports
Kerala, a significant cocoa-producing state, saw a slight dip in cocoa export performance. In the last financial year, the state exported 128.23 tonnes of cocoa products, generating ₹10.76 crore in revenue — down from ₹11.91 crore earned from 205.83 tonnes exported in 2023–24.

Cocoa cultivation in India is primarily concentrated in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Andhra Pradesh leads with 40% of the total production, while Kerala contributes around 36%.
