Under the leadership of H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania this week inaugurated the Kwala Inland Container Depot (ICD) and Kwala Industrial Park, marking a milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its logistics and trade infrastructure.

Spread across 500 acres, the new facility is directly connected to both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) networks. The project is designed to decongest Dar es Salaam Port and facilitate the seamless shift of cargo movement from road to rail, enhancing efficiency across the national supply chain.

“This is not just an infrastructure project — it is a nation-building initiative,” officials said during the launch.

    Driving Economic and Regional Growth

The Kwala Industrial Park is expected to accelerate industrialization, attract foreign direct investment, and generate thousands of jobs, thereby giving a major boost to Tanzania’s manufacturing sector.

Strategically located along the Central Corridor, Kwala positions Tanzania as a regional trade and logistics hub for East Africa. It will also enhance intra-African trade, aligning with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agenda.

    A Sustainable Future

The project is aligned with Tanzania’s Vision 2025 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing environmentally friendly practices and inclusive growth.

    Call for Financial Support

Industry leaders emphasized that for such visions to achieve full scale, banks and financial institutions must recognize the importance of rail-linked trade ecosystems and extend long-term capital support to private sector players.

The Tanzania East Africa Gateway Terminal Limited expressed pride in being at the forefront of this development, stating that it is committed to building not just port infrastructure, but the future of African trade.
