Senior diplomats from Iran, India, and Uzbekistan held their first round of trilateral political consultations in Tehran on Tuesday, pledging to step up cooperation in trade, connectivity, and the fight against terrorism.
The meeting, hosted by Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together Mohammad Reza Bahrami, Director General for South Asia (Iran), Anand Prakash, Joint Secretary (PAI) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and Gholamjon Primkulov, Head of the Department for Cooperation with South Asia, Near, Middle East and Africa at Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Welcoming the launch of the trilateral format, the three sides agreed to convene such meetings on a regular, annual basis to advance mutual interests and contribute to regional welfare and prosperity.
Connectivity and trade remained central themes of the talks. The delegations reviewed progress on decisions from the third Chabahar Working Group meeting held in Mumbai in November 2024 and discussed ways to maximize the use of regional ports and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Measures to boost trade ties and expand economic cooperation were also examined.
The three countries further exchanged views on key regional developments and stressed the need to strengthen mechanisms for joint action against extremism and terrorism.
