Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) is pulling in fresh liner calls out of Nhava Sheva after a major capacity upgrade, bolstering the port’s appeal as India’s container trade continues to expand.
The PSA India-run facility recently completed enhancements that have lifted yard space, quay efficiency and overall handling capacity. According to shipping sources, the improvements are already translating into new box services being routed via BMCT, with carriers seeking faster vessel turnarounds and better reliability at the busy gateway.
Nhava Sheva — home to India’s largest container port cluster — has seen demand for berthing windows rise in tandem with export growth, particularly on long-haul trades to Europe and the US. BMCT’s added muscle is expected to ease congestion risks and give shipping lines greater scheduling flexibility.
Analysts note that the expansion also strengthens BMCT’s competitive position against rival private terminals in the harbour, while supporting government aims to scale up India’s maritime infrastructure to meet future trade growth.
