Tata Motors has agreed to deploy 40 hydrogen-powered trucks at VO Chidambaranar Port over the next two years, in a move aimed at advancing clean mobility in port operations.
The hydrogen fuel cell trucks will be introduced in phases and are expected to handle container transfers and cargo movement within the port ecosystem. The initiative forms part of a broader push to reduce emissions in heavy-duty transportation and promote alternative fuel technologies across logistics networks.
According to officials, hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles provide zero tailpipe emissions while maintaining the range and payload capacity required for intensive port operations. The deployment will also include the development of supporting refuelling and maintenance infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency.
Port authorities said the project aligns with sustainability objectives and efforts to modernise cargo handling systems. The initiative is anticipated to cut reliance on diesel-powered fleets and contribute to lower carbon footprints in maritime logistics.
Industry observers view the collaboration as a significant step toward mainstreaming hydrogen mobility in India’s commercial vehicle segment, particularly in high-traffic industrial hubs such as Tuticorin.
