In a significant move to strengthen logistics support for the gems and jewellery sector, the Department of Posts (DoP), Maharashtra Circle, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) to offer specialized postal and logistics services for precious cargo.

The agreement was formalised in the presence of Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra Circle. The MoU was signed by Pandurang Chormale, Senior Superintendent of India Post, and Anoop Mehta, President of BDB.

    Dedicated logistics ecosystem at BKC

Under the partnership, India Post will establish a Foreign Post Office within the BDB complex at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. This facility—located in unit numbers 1 and 2—will cater to both members and non-members of BDB, enabling seamless handling of export and import consignments as well as domestic parcels.

The initiative is designed to create a comprehensive logistics ecosystem for high-value cargo, particularly diamonds and jewellery, by integrating postal services directly within one of the world’s largest diamond trading hubs.

    Wide range of services

As part of the agreement, India Post will act as the primary logistics partner, offering services such as Speed Post, India Post Parcel, and Logistics Post. Additionally, Media Post and other value-added services will be made available for international and domestic shipments.

A key feature of the collaboration is the introduction of doorstep logistics services, allowing exporters and traders to book shipments directly from within the BDB premises. This in-house booking facility is expected to simplify processes and reduce turnaround times for high-value exports and imports.

    Supporting a high-traffic trade hub

Bharat Diamond Bourse, which witnesses a daily footfall of around 45,000 people and houses approximately 3,500 offices, will actively promote India Post’s services across its business community. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance accessibility to reliable and cost-effective logistics solutions.

    Boost to exports

Highlighting the importance of the partnership, Amitabh Singh stated that the collaboration leverages India Post’s vast global network to facilitate the movement of valuable cargo, effectively connecting BDB traders to international markets.

The establishment of a dedicated Foreign Post Office within the bourse is expected to streamline export procedures, offering exporters a more efficient and economical alternative for global shipments.

The partnership is anticipated to drive higher export volumes from BDB while reinforcing India Post’s role in supporting the country’s growing export ecosystem—making it a mutually beneficial arrangement for both organizations and the broader diamond trade community.
