In a significant move to support the aviation sector, the Government of India has announced a 25% reduction in airport charges, aiming to ease mounting cost pressures on airlines and improve sectoral stability.

The decision, implemented through the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority, is expected to lower operational expenses for carriers, particularly at major metro airports where user development fees (UDF) and landing and parking charges form a substantial portion of airline costs.

Airlines have been grappling with rising fuel prices, volatile currency movements, and increasing maintenance expenses, all of which have compressed margins in recent quarters. The reduction in airport charges is likely to provide immediate financial relief and improve cash flows for both full-service and low-cost carriers.

Industry experts believe the move could also help stabilize ticket prices, benefiting passengers amid ongoing fare volatility. Lower airport fees may encourage airlines to maintain or expand capacity on key domestic and international routes.

Airport operators, however, may face short-term revenue pressures due to the fee cut. Officials indicated that the measure is part of a broader effort to balance the interests of airlines, passengers, and infrastructure providers while sustaining growth in the aviation sector.

The policy comes at a time when India’s aviation market is witnessing strong recovery in passenger traffic and increasing competition among carriers. Stakeholders expect the fee reduction to support continued growth and enhance the overall competitiveness of the sector.
