In a significant development for domestic multimodal logistics in Karnataka, Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has strengthened its rail-linked cargo network with the successful launch of a new domestic rail service from Hubballi.
The initiative saw the movement of the first container rake carrying pig iron from the MAKU railway siding in Karnataka to Ludhiana, marking an important step in enhancing industrial cargo connectivity between southern and northern India. The operation was carried out in coordination with South Western Railway, TCI CONCOR Multimodal Logistics, SLR Metallics and MSPL AHB.
The newly introduced service is expected to provide industries in the region with faster and more efficient transportation options by integrating rail into long-distance cargo movement. By enabling direct containerized movement of bulk industrial commodities such as pig iron, the service aims to improve supply chain reliability while reducing dependency on road transport for long-haul freight.
Industry stakeholders believe the development will help strengthen Hubballi’s role as an emerging logistics hub in Karnataka by improving access to northern manufacturing and consumption centres. The rail-linked movement is also expected to contribute to lower transit times, better cargo handling efficiency, and more sustainable freight transportation through increased modal shift to rail.
The initiative further reflects the growing focus on integrated multimodal logistics solutions across India, where coordinated efforts between rail operators, logistics companies and industrial cargo producers are helping create more streamlined and cost-effective supply chains.
With rising demand for reliable inland freight connectivity, developments such as these continue to reinforce the importance of containerized rail logistics in supporting industrial growth, regional trade integration and efficient cargo distribution across the country.
