The Maritime India Foundation (MIF), the implementing agency for the Sagarmala Startup Innovation Initiative under the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), has formalised Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with premier academic institutions to establish Maritime Innovation Hubs (MIHs) aimed at accelerating innovation and startup-led transformation in India’s maritime sector.

The MoUs were signed on Tuesday at the premises of the Chennai Port Authority (ChPA) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), and the Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai. The agreement with the fourth proposed hub, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur), is expected to be signed subsequently.

The signing ceremony was presided over by S. Viswanathan, Managing Director of Maritime India Foundation and Chairperson of Chennai Port Authority.

With the formalisation of these partnerships, the Sagarmala Startup Innovation Initiative has now moved into its execution phase. Under the program, the newly established Maritime Innovation Hubs will onboard, mentor, and support 36 startups selected to work on 40 innovation projects focused on addressing key operational and technological challenges across the Indian maritime ecosystem.

The initiative is designed to create a collaborative platform where stakeholders from the maritime industry can present real-world operational issues to startups and research institutions. The selected startups will work on developing advanced technology-driven solutions aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability, digitalisation, logistics optimisation, port operations, and maritime infrastructure management.

According to Chennai Port Authority, the initiative is expected to play a significant role in driving modernisation and technological advancement across India’s maritime sector while encouraging indigenous innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Maritime Innovation Hubs will function as centres for research, incubation, industry collaboration, and technology validation, leveraging the technical expertise and academic capabilities of leading institutions such as IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, and IMU Chennai.

The Sagarmala Startup Innovation Initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and supports the national objective of “Make in India, Make for the World” by promoting the development of homegrown maritime technologies and solutions with global potential.

Officials noted that the collaboration between academia, startups, industry stakeholders, and government agencies is expected to strengthen India’s maritime innovation ecosystem and contribute toward enhancing the competitiveness and resilience of the country’s ports, shipping, and logistics sectors.
