Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority has attributed delays in container evacuation at the port to an acute shortage of trailers and truck drivers, impacting cargo movement and increasing turnaround time for import and export consignments.
According to port officials, the shortage has disrupted the smooth evacuation of containers from terminals, leading to congestion within port premises and delays in the movement of laden and empty containers. The issue has been further aggravated by rising cargo volumes and operational bottlenecks across the logistics chain.
Industry stakeholders said the limited availability of transport vehicles and skilled drivers has affected the timely pickup and delivery of containers, particularly during peak cargo periods. Transport operators have also cited higher operating costs, driver attrition, and long waiting hours at terminals as key challenges impacting fleet deployment.
JNPA said it is coordinating with terminal operators, transport associations, and logistics stakeholders to ease congestion and improve cargo flow. Measures including better traffic management, digital gate processing, and operational coordination are being explored to minimise delays.
The port continues to handle strong container volumes despite ongoing logistical constraints, with trade bodies urging faster interventions to stabilise hinterland connectivity and improve evacuation efficiency.
