Indian Railways has recorded a sharp increase in cement transportation over the past four months following a series of operational and policy reforms aimed at improving freight efficiency and attracting bulk cargo movement to rail networks.
According to industry sources, cement loading volumes surged by around 170% during the period, supported by measures such as streamlined freight procedures, improved wagon availability, and more flexible logistics solutions for manufacturers. The railways are now looking to expand similar initiatives into the fly ash transportation segment to further strengthen bulk cargo movement.
Officials said the reforms are part of a broader strategy to increase rail’s share in freight logistics, reduce transportation costs, and improve sustainability by shifting cargo from road to rail. Cement producers have increasingly turned to rail services to move large volumes more efficiently across key consumption markets.
Logistics experts noted that rising infrastructure and construction activity in India is driving higher demand for cement transportation, while improved rail connectivity and multimodal integration are helping Indian Railways position itself as a preferred mode for bulk industrial cargo.
