The Adani Group is exploring investment opportunities in West Bengal’s ports and logistics sector as the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK) moves ahead with an ambitious expansion strategy aimed at strengthening both cargo operations and tourism infrastructure.

SMPK has announced plans to develop an international-standard river cruise terminal and a maritime museum at Garden Reach in Kolkata, positioning the port as a major tourism and river-cruise destination while enhancing its role in regional trade and logistics.

The port authority is also targeting a significant increase in cargo handling capacity, aiming to raise throughput from around 93 million metric tonnes to 120 million metric tonnes over the next three to four years through investments in logistics parks, industrial infrastructure, and cargo-handling facilities.

Adani Group’s interest comes amid a broader push to strengthen West Bengal’s maritime and logistics ecosystem. The conglomerate is evaluating opportunities across ports, logistics, infrastructure, power, and related sectors in the state, reflecting growing confidence in Bengal’s potential as a key eastern gateway for trade.

Industry observers note that enhanced port infrastructure, improved multimodal connectivity, and tourism-focused waterfront development could help SMPK regain cargo volumes and attract greater private-sector participation. The initiatives are expected to support economic activity, boost cruise tourism, and improve the competitiveness of eastern India’s maritime trade corridor.

The developments also align with ongoing efforts to expand maritime infrastructure in West Bengal, including proposals for new port and logistics projects aimed at strengthening the state’s role in India’s coastal and inland waterways network.
