India is stepping up efforts to develop a world-class shipbuilding ecosystem and strengthen its position in the global maritime industry, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said.
The government is focusing on expanding shipbuilding capacity, improving infrastructure and supporting domestic shipyards to compete for international orders. The strategy is also aimed at increasing India’s share of the global shipbuilding market and reducing dependence on overseas yards.
Sonowal highlighted the growing opportunities for Indian shipyards as global demand for new vessels rises and the maritime industry moves towards cleaner and more technologically advanced ships.
The government is working to strengthen the wider shipbuilding value chain, including maritime equipment manufacturers, suppliers, repair facilities and ancillary industries. A stronger domestic ecosystem could help generate skilled employment and encourage greater private-sector investment.
India is also seeking to attract international companies and technology partnerships to improve shipbuilding capabilities and enhance the competitiveness of domestic yards.
The push forms part of the government’s broader maritime development strategy, which includes expanding port infrastructure, strengthening coastal shipping and promoting domestic vessel construction.
With rising global demand for commercial, defence and specialised vessels, India aims to emerge as a competitive shipbuilding destination and establish a stronger presence in international maritime markets.
