    Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet yesterday inaugurated the first phase of the $140-million Kampot Multipurpose Port.

    It is one of the 10 multipurpose ports in the country and will promote waterway transport and boost foreign trade.

    The new port can handle around 10,000 tonnes, or 666 TEUs, ships with three global clearinghouse systems and three rubber-tyred gantry cranes, Peng Ponea, minister of public works and transport, was cited as saying by Cambodian media outlets.

    The port covers 678 hectares with a 55,000-sq m container ground, 8,800-sq m warehouse.

    The project was started in May 2022 by the Shanghai Construction Group and the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
