In a goodwill gesture ahead of Durga Puja, Bangladesh has approved the export of 1,200 tonnes of Hilsa fish to India, reaffirming a cultural tradition cherished by Bengalis on both sides of the border.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce, exporters interested in participating must submit applications in person by September 11, 2025, along with the required documents including an updated trade license, income tax and VAT certificates, and a valid sales contract.
The government has fixed a minimum export price of USD 12.50 per kilogram for Hilsa consignments.
Hilsa exports from Bangladesh are generally restricted under a 2012 ban, but special exemptions are granted during the festive season to strengthen cultural and economic ties. Last year’s festive consignment was warmly received in West Bengal, where Hilsa holds a central place in Durga Puja celebrations.
This year’s approval once again highlights the shared traditions and deep cultural bond between the two nations.
