Bangladesh Railway is set to procure 200 broad-gauge passenger coaches from India as part of efforts to modernise its rolling stock and enhance capacity across key routes.

The planned import is aimed at addressing rising passenger demand and replacing ageing coaches, while improving service quality and operational efficiency. The new coaches are expected to be equipped with upgraded safety features, better passenger amenities, and improved ride comfort.

Officials indicated that the procurement will be carried out through bilateral arrangements, reflecting growing cooperation between India and Bangladesh in the rail sector. India has been a key partner in supporting Bangladesh’s railway modernisation through supply of rolling stock, infrastructure development, and technical assistance.

The addition of 200 coaches is likely to strengthen connectivity on major intercity and regional routes, helping Bangladesh expand its rail network and reduce congestion. The move is also expected to support economic activity by facilitating smoother passenger movement.

Industry observers note that such cross-border collaborations are becoming increasingly important in South Asia, as countries look to upgrade transport infrastructure and improve regional connectivity.

The delivery timeline and deployment plans are expected to be finalised in the coming months, with the project seen as a significant step toward modernising Bangladesh’s rail transport system.
