In a significant enforcement action, Indian Customs officials have detained a container loaded with Chinese walnuts that were allegedly misdeclared as being of Afghan origin at the Nhava Sheva Port.
The consignment, imported as part of a dry fruit shipment, was flagged during routine scrutiny and risk assessment procedures at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Upon detailed examination, authorities found that the walnuts were of Chinese origin but had been declared as products of Afghanistan in the shipping documents.
Officials suspect the misdeclaration was intended to circumvent import regulations, duties, or trade restrictions applicable to goods originating from China. Samples have been sent for further verification, and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the involvement of the importer and other stakeholders in the supply chain.
Customs authorities are examining documentation, including bills of lading and certificates of origin, to determine whether there was deliberate falsification. If proven, the importer could face penalties under the Customs Act, including confiscation of goods and financial fines.
The detained container remains under Customs custody at the port pending further inquiry. Authorities reiterated their commitment to strict monitoring of imports and preventing trade malpractice through enhanced risk management systems and intelligence-led inspections.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
