CMA CGM has marked a major milestone by adding its 400th owned vessel to its fleet with the launch of a methanol-powered ship, underscoring the company’s commitment to fleet expansion and sustainable shipping. The new vessel, which runs on methanol—a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels—represents a step forward in CMA CGM’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and align with global decarbonisation goals.

The launch highlights CMA CGM’s dual strategy of growing its fleet while adopting environmentally friendly technologies. Methanol-powered ships produce significantly lower sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared to conventional fuels, helping the company meet stricter international environmental regulations and respond to increasing demand for greener shipping solutions from customers worldwide.

CMA CGM officials noted that the milestone of 400 owned vessels demonstrates the group’s continued investment in long-term shipping capacity and operational independence. The company has been steadily incorporating advanced propulsion technologies and alternative fuel solutions across its fleet to enhance efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and support sustainable global supply chains.

Industry analysts view the launch as a signal of CMA CGM’s leadership in fleet innovation, combining scale with sustainability. With growing regulatory pressure and customer demand for lower-carbon logistics, methanol-powered vessels are expected to play an increasingly important role in the company’s roadmap toward greener maritime transport.
