Global shipping and logistics group CMA CGM is reportedly the leading contender to acquire a stake in one of France’s largest rail freight operators, a move that would further strengthen its inland transport capabilities and expand its integrated logistics network across Europe.

The potential investment aligns with CMA CGM’s long-term strategy of building end-to-end supply chain solutions that combine maritime, rail, road, and air transport. By increasing its presence in the rail freight sector, the company aims to improve cargo connectivity between French ports and key industrial and distribution hubs, offering customers faster and more sustainable multimodal transport options.

The acquisition would reinforce CMA CGM’s broader logistics expansion, which has included significant investments in port terminals, warehousing, air cargo, and inland transport infrastructure. Rail freight is becoming an increasingly important component of European supply chains as businesses seek to reduce road congestion and lower carbon emissions.

If completed, the deal would strengthen CMA CGM’s position in the European logistics market while supporting France’s efforts to boost rail freight as a cleaner alternative to road transport. The transaction is expected to complement the group’s existing multimodal operations and enhance its ability to provide integrated freight services across the continent.
